Some common misconceptions about self employed care

Frequently asked...

You cannot register with CQC if you are self employed, only care companies who employ staff can register with regulatory bodies.  As a self employed carer it is deemed as a ‘private agreement’ between you and the person needing care, therefore is not regulated.

As a self employed carer you are able to administer medication, provide personal care and deliver any other support or care required.  In fact, one of the big joys of being self employed is that you can deliver care and support that is wanted and wished, not just needed, so you can take people out for days out, walk their dog, go to the shops and even change light bulbs!

You can be SELF EMPLOYED as a carer!  Or a support worker or a PA, or whatever term you wish to use!

So just like a plumber or an electrician can offer their services as a self employed business, so can you as a carer.  The only difference being is that care is the service you provide!

Let’s bust the myth that you MUST  work for a company if you are a carer!  That is not true!  You CAN be your own boss!  You can be a Self Employed Carer!

And because you cut out the middleman of a care company, you get much better pay (employed carer gets around £9-£13 per hour, a self employed carer gets £20-£25 per hour), as well as the ability to chose your own work schedule, choose who you work with and choose what services you deliver.

This is one of the biggest issues people worry about when first going self employed!  But it truly is a non issue!  The demand for personalised high quality care is MASSIVE and growing each and every day.  We show you how to position yourself in the market so that work will flow your way.  You just need to make the leap and decide that you want to be your own boss and take control of your career!

You are able to work alongside a buddy or two and ‘co-ordinate’ care between you.  As long as the person receiving the care remains in control and is able to have a say as to who helps them, you can totally work with a work buddy.  In fact we recommend that you do find a buddy to work with if you can, so that you can provide a more reliable and flexible service as you are able to share the work load between you and your work buddy.

Not at all, it seems much more scary than it is!  We will show you how to work out how much money you need to put away each month for tax and when it comes to submitting your self assessment, you can either use an accountant or follow our step by step course to submit. The most important thing is to make sure you put away and don’t spend some money for tax each month!

As a member of the Professional Carers Network you are automatically insured with gold standard public liability insurance so you can be at ease knowing we have you covered!  You are even covered to take your clients on holiday, walk their dogs and do the gardening if you wish!

Don’t worry, often life experience is enough to get you going!  It is more important that you have a caring nature and you are naturally kind and helpful, than it is to have vast industry knowledge.  And as part of your membership with the Professional Carers Network you get access to over 30 care courses so you can soon brush up your knowledge.  As well as support when you need it if you ever need to talk a situation through.

Maria is the most caring person I know. She goes above and beyond for her clients. Maria helped me on my journey to become a self employed carer myself a couple of years ago, the best decision I've ever made.

Pros: The induction process was quite quick and in depth and you learnt a lot both hands on and taught. The staff in the office and out in community are very warm and personable. A range of support networks are available from fellow carers to supervisors and management. It’s a job that makes you feel like you make a positive impact.Cons: In community it can be difficult to manage timings and physically demanding when you’re walking a lot.

The supervisor had preprinted the agreement based on the incorrect referral. This was subsequently discussed, revised and agreed between all parties.Unfortunately, the supervisor did not update the information at the office. Consequently, Carers are not adhering to the revised times. This has had a negative impact on the client’s health and wellbeing, their family and other health care visitors. As you are paying for Carers to work to your agreed schedule, it is seriously worth considering other care agencies this before you commission Professional Carers.

I have worked with professional carers for around 4 weeks now, I started my 3 day induction the week after my interview which was thorough and covered all bases that I would need to know once I was out working , once my DBS was back I did 2 shadow shifts which really gave me a feel for what I would be doing once working alone and this really help me when I went out on my first independent run. The staff are great and are there if you need anything and I am thoroughly enjoying my time with the company and can’t wait to see what’s ahead for me.Kirsty cooper

Almost three years working for professional carers, I've never really felt valued by management until working here. Training is frequent and mandatory. There is always someone available if you have an issue. All the staff I've come across in or out the office are lovely. I've heard a few negative things about other care companies I'm happy I'm at the right one. The clients always come first and the carers are paid better than most. This is also the first job as a carer (of 20 years) that I've been paid over minimum age.

As a new member to Professional Carers I have settled into what I feel a lovely compassionate company within 3 weeks. The recruitment, online training and thorough induction/training has all been done correctly and was extremely useful. Following some not so nice experiences, Professional Carers are as they say, caring to their service users and staff also, many thanks
